[wanabidii] Media should educate Kenyans on how to choose good leaders

Media should educate Kenyans on how to choose good leaders

Our media needs to play a leading role in educating Kenyans on how to choose good leaders.

While we are not used to political endorsements by the media in Kenya, I think it is a trend we need to see so long as it is done fairly, objectively and in good faith.

It should also be based on the policies of those running for political office. In Western democracies, major media houses endorse candidates through thorough research and analysis of one's agenda, based on popular opinion.

Our news anchors, reporters, editorial personnel, columnists and commentators have a great role to help build a better Kenya by ensuring that what is injected into the minds of the citizens will create harmony, peace and understanding.

I hold the media fraternity in high esteem just as I respect teachers. While a teacher imparts knowledge and skills to a learner, a journalist is even more critical when reporting and analysing current events.

A journalist often gives a critical view and conclusion on issues that enhance the lives of people in society.

At a time when wananchi need guidance, it will be fair if the media goes further to give information on the character and behaviour of those who want to take the leadership mantle of our nation.

If the New York Times of US and The Guardian of the UK endorse candidates running for office, we need to see the same trend in Kenya so long as it is done objectively and without favouritism.

Editors and columnists should get down to business and quiz aspiring leaders, especially presidential candidates who are hopping from one place to the other, trying to entice voters with many promises.

We want these aspiring leaders to be seriously questioned, especially on policy issues. The media should assess the viability of the promises and say whether they are achievable.

There is also need to say whether they resonate well with the aspirations of the people of Kenya, and whether they are in tandem with our current laws.

Western media houses usually endorse candidates who stand strong on issues and aspirations of their nations.

The media played a pivotal role in the emancipation of our nation from the one party dictatorship in the late 80s and early 90s, and Kenyans once again expect it to give them direction, especially now that we are under a new constitutional dispensation, which has a great promise for our nation.
